This is truly a beautiful graphic novel! Michael Elgamal tells the story of Christ's resurrection from a viewpoint we don't often consider -- those beloved people who await Him in Hades. The righteous Simeon, who lived a long life and beheld the face of the Christ Child, dies and descends into Hades, where he is greeted by familiar faces from the Old Testament who await their deliverance -- Prophets like Daniel and Isaiah, the Psalmist David, Adam and Eve. They speak in the novel as they spoke in life, with the same words they use in the Scriptures, so that the reader sees the prophecies fulfilled. I have long been fascinated with the idea that when Christ resurrected people, like Jairus' daughter and Lazarus, they went to Hades but were called out of Hades and back to life. Did everyone in Hades hear Christ call out to them? Elgamal explores what this must have looked like in Hades, and what it could have meant to those who were waiting on the Lord's mercy. The story of the Harrowing of Hades is so powerful, and so necessary to understanding the meaning and import of the Resurrection, and yet it has been lost to so many modern Christians. This graphic novel is a wonderful means of bringing us back to a deeper awareness of the meaning of salvation, and how great our God truly is. I am planning to buy cases of these books for an all-ages Holy Friday retreat in our parish, so that we can contemplate the experience of the Resurrection from this angle. I am certain this Bible-saturated and beautifully drawn book will bring special depth and meaning to our Resurrection services.
I just finished reading this book. Words cannot describe the creativity and beauty of words and illustrations that tell us a story we kinda "think" we know but not really....because once you read it as depicted, you are emotionally connected somehow to our righteous fathers who were in hades waiting for a savior. This entertaining read is another testament to the glorious blessing we have for being born into this faith and living it after Christ had died for us. I was moved by this beautiful book and I will be waiting for more "creative genius" books by this author depicting our glorious faith. I congratulate the author for such an amazing work. I literally never review books but this one deserves all the stars I can give! God bless. Waiting for more!!
I have been following Creative Orthodox's blog and I LOVE his work. So when this full length graphic novel came out, I purchased it immediately, and I was not disappointed. The authors somehow manage to combine a gripping narrative with their knowledge of the Church Fathers on the Harrowing of Hades and amazing illustrations. This is no small feat. I was drawn into another world reading this. I cannot wait for more from Creative Orthodox!
WOW!! I cannot say enough good things about this incredible book. It is so beautifully written and illustrated! I am so impressed by how well researched and thought out/imagined this was. It really brought the Truth to life. BUY THIS BOOK! Read it, savor it, cherish it and cherish its beautiful truth of Christ's victory over death and hades. I plan on purchasing copies for my kids in Sunday School and reading it with them and also for friends. Don't hesitate, it's worth every penny. GET IT! I really enjoyed this artwork as an adult. Clearly defined nothing confusing or cluttered. It really helps me visually how it happens.
This little book is beautifully illustrated and chock full of Scripture, depicting the days leading up to Christ's descent into Hades, where He trampled down death by His own death.
Very powerful. As a natural learning/interest led homeschooler, I love resources that aren’t textbook like but teach the faith in an interconnected visual way. This book has so many references: scripture and Fathers of the Church and teach the important big concepts that we miss so often when we teach our kids about the faith. It’s not just that Christ rose from the dead...it’s not just saying something because it is rote and something we grew up with. This book drives that beautiful point home, gives it so much more dimension so that when we proclaim, Christ is Risen, we can truly understand with deeper meaning what we are exclaiming. A must read before Pascha for both children and adults.
I enjoyed every page of the novel. The artist is very creative & talented. On addition to that , the story is based on the most credible church teaching about the subject. It is a masterpiece graphic novel .
