I first became aware of the pirate Stede Bonnet when, as a boy, I wandered upon the pirate marker at White Point Garden while on vacation in Charleston. Years later, as a young sailor in the U.S. Navy stationed in Charleston, I spent many an afternoon re-reading the marker, walking around the Battery, and wondering where Bonnet's body might be buried. As a middle age man, who among us hasn't entertained fantasies about slipping away to adventure?Bonnet's story is both goofy and captivating. I know it by heart. Christopher Byrd Downey - "Captain Byrd" - does the tale great service. If you are a Bonnet enthusiast, there aren't any real revelations. If you are new to his story, I recommend Downey's treatment. As familiar as I am with it, Stede Bonnet: Charleston's Gentleman Pirate is still an informative and entertaining read. The illustrations add to the book and help the read visualize the Golden Age of Piracy in Colonial America.
A good book, very informative and entertaining as well. I bought it after reading the author's intro online - he explains why he wanted to write about Bonnet, and it's a touching story.The only reason I didn't give this five stars is because his interpretation of Stede is no different than any other book, though he said it would be. He said that Bonnet is always portrayed as a buffoon, and he hoped to change that. Unfortunately, he didn't - I suppose the facts as laid out lie more in the buffoon direction. So I was hoping for a new interpretation, but it was more sympathetic than different. That aside, however, it is a great source on the subject.
I gave this book 5 stars because it was everything that I wanted it to be-It was a short, well-written account of Charleston's Gentleman Pirate. I have read many longer historical works that were not as well organized or entertaining. I picked it up after a short vacation in Charleston that left me wanting to know more about the city and the pirates that prowled off her coast. I would recommend it to those who want a quick and lively read about a real pirate- and an unusual one at that. It would even be perfect for the beach (and better than the young adult fiction your significant other is reading, since you will actually learn something). Christopher Byrd Downey (Captain Byrd) now has a new fan and I will pick up his other book about Charleston and the Golden Age of Piracy. When I return to Charleston, I will also look up his boat tour!
I read this as a teen, and picked it up again recently when I had some questions about Stede Bonnet. I can't speak for it's historical accuracy, but it does appear well researched. It is a very fast read, no more than a couple hours, but it kept me interested the entire time. If anything, it left me wanting more!
more priates... a unique character in a tough business. Stede was a reader and had a library aboard his pirate ship.

A beautifully crafted history I found to be a wonderful page-turner. Downey has made a big splash with this fascinating biography of Stede Bonnet.
