As a practicing Marriage and Family Therapist, I wholeheartedly recommend this book to my peers, and anyone interested in how family therapy works. Presented in the form of the narrated story of a family of five (accompanied by plenty of theory), this timeless volume provides a good high-level look at the family therapy techniques used by the likes of Napier and Whitaker. Interested in becoming a family therapist? Read it. Thinking about having your family attend therapy? Read it. Wondering about the benefits of family therapy over individual therapy? Read it. Are you part of a family? Read it. This is a seminal work, and should be required reading for all MFTs and anyone who treats families. It used to be, but has fallen out of fashion due to it's age. I don't care how old it is (and yes, it is a bit dated), the ideas presented are largely timeless. I just re-read it again this year (late 2016), and loved every page. 10/10. Seriously.

Wonderful account and great insight provided for family therapy as well as group and individual therapy. Whitaker was a master and Napier, clearly a most talented therapist and writer. Never have I been so involved in a textbook. I found myself laughing out loud several times and shedding a few tears. Carl Whitaker is sorely missed.

I ordered this book for a Family Therapy course that I was taking as part of my Masters program. I thought that I would just read a chapter a week or so until I finished it. However, I was quite surprised that this book is more story like than textbook oriented. I really really got into the story (and learned a great deal about family therapy in the process). I ended up reading the book in its entirety in two days. I really enjoyed this book and have since developed an interest in family therapy. Additionally, this book isn't a tough read and doesn't require prior subject knowledge. I would recommend this to any counseling student or individual who has a personal interest in learning about the dynamics of family interaction. Great book, will look for more by this author!

I'm a creative/ artist, an occasional councellor, and not a therapist, who just happens to like therapy session books and therapy-related tv or movies. I discovered this when following the trail of Edwin Friedman and Bowen family theories. I find the real-time dynamics detailed here quite fascinating, with a "deputy" therapist in the "scene", which I compare to director actor relationship management in theater or on film sets. I can only imagine, the amount of technical discipline demanded - as well as the weight of responsibility shouldered by the therapist-directors must be tremendous. Perhaps why this therapy type is not more popular, then or now.Very enlightening read, regardless. I gained valuable insights about multiple generation family dynamics. Recommended for the intellectually curious or those seeking some alternative perspective on complex family in crisis situations.

Remarkable and fascinating Read. A friend of mine recommended this book particularly for the way it explores roles within family systems. I was fascinated. The authors use many case studies and descriptions of interactions with clients to illustrate each concept -- this got a little dull for me and so I found myself skimming the studies to get to the author's conclusions (minus 1 star for that). I wish they would've illustrated it in a different manner; the book ends up coming off quite academic even though it seems to be intended toward anyone. The material itself is fantastic and super interesting.

This is an EXCELELNT book for learning the dynamics of family counseling. You certainly get a great overview of the different approaches of therapy and you can learn how to tailor your own approach to this aspect of counseling. It's a very entertaining read, so you don't have to be worried about being bored. It was worth the money.

An old book, with references to cassettes and Vhs, that still feels relevant and a vanguard. The story of a family in therapy is intertwined with snippets of wisdom and the therapists' personal stories, creating the most vivid approach to hands on training that the written word can offer.A must read for a therapist. It will make sense out of all those textbooks.

I could not put this book down. For anyone interested in family therapy or curious about the process of family therapy this is a must read. I found this book because it was recommended by my supervisor but I also attended the UW-Madison where Carl Whitaker taught/worked. Many nights I stayed up late just to read one more chapter. I bargained time with myself (if you do this you can read for 15 extra minutes tonight). This book really challenges clinicians to look at what's going on in the family instead of making one person the scapegoat. Can you really "fix" an individual if nothing in that persons environment has changed? I honestly view the way I do therapy a little differently based on this book. I hope you enjoy the book as I did.
