This is a great collection of junk knowledge of no benefit to anyone - except maybe somebody who is interested and doesn't know where to start. The stuff this book contains takes about 3 seconds to process. It might tell you what a chief petty officer is. Here is a resupply ship. I'm still reading mine. Painful. I lost my first copy a long time ago, so I got another one. It isn't a reference book. Nobody says, well the BJM defines blah blah blah. Nobody says, oh I better check what the BJM says about that. It is a really weird book. It explains stuff you can't control or change and don't really change so knowing it is really pointless. If my fifteen year old cousin got a copy and tried to impress me with his knowledge, I'd be really annoyed, two plus two is four, great kid who cares go bother someone else. And, even knowing it doesn't make you a navy man. It is a really weird book. One thing that always gets me perplexed is when they talk about their navy core values - honor, courage, commitment. It is the weirdest thing. Is isn't like the ship bestows those values on people like the sun puts light on stuff. And people are just people. They lie and groan and complain. Plus, the navy crashes into stuff all the time. So it isn't like they must have these values, or that they are inseparable from those values, or that it is not possible to not have them, or that everyone has them all the time. And having these values apparently does not stop ships from crashing in to other ships.Weird. Each time I pick it up, I only last about 3 minutes before getting really irritated. It implies a rigidity for arbitrary conditions. Like, instead of grenade, we call it a fuzz-wobber. Ok, so if I continue calling it a grenade, so what? Why can't you call a grenade a grenade, why have some other word when they is already a word for it? So arbitrary. No changes allowed. Lots of bizzare and random stuff. Like midshipman. What, why? Oh because they used that word in the 18th century? So we are obligated to use it now instead of USNA student? So weird. Does it make sense to use 17th century vocabulary while operating a fighter jet? If you had a modern scientific machine, are you going to have the persons operating it speak to each other in middle english? - yeoman, bosun's mate, side boys. Grown men are called side boys. Can you imagine calling your uncle a side boy? You boys go there and stand around and wait for me to pompously strut down this here gangway with my sword on my hip. Yeah you 40 year old men need to salute a 22 year old college graduate who majored in History at local state college. That is not demeaning, degrading, or disparate treatment? Really? It is like a remnant, a book of obsolete rituals from some ancient society, just in case you thought society had advanced beyond a caste system, here the navy is to show you that it has not. I wonder what people would think of me if I insisted on having my barber and plumber and gardener and trash collectors, gas station attendent, and mail carriers salute me before speaking to me. Carry on gardener. Very well trash man.
I was in the Navy from 1966-70 and my Bluejacket's Manual got lost in the shuffle when I moved. So this was a welcome item to my eyes and it's even better than I had hoped for. Als, it's a Centennial edition, which made it even more special. Good value.
This is the "Bible" of the enlisted sailor's navy. It has everything you need to know about what it takes to be a productive member of the naval service. Things have changed a lot from when I served from 1966-1970. It was fun to get up to speed on all the items that have changed since the Vietnam era.
This is a required book once you enter the Navy. More than enough information is in the book that will help you on your daily journey in the Navy. It is good to for those that are just interested in the Navy atmosphere. This book will be one that is given to you once you join the Navy. The information will help you in your test taking for promotions as well but it doesn't go into very much detail of the different ratings due to security clearances required for some of the jobs.
Exactly what I ordered. Be advised if you order a used one it shall come inscribed with some trembling recruit's last four and division number...thumbs up.
I bought this book for my grandson who is planning on entering the Navy next year.As a veteran of 23 years myself,I knew how much information is contained in this "Navy Bible".My grandson, while not normally an avid reader, has been simply devouring this books contents.I have no doubt that he will be 100% more knowledgable about the Navy when he arrives at boot camp than I was.
this book was a wealth of information when it was first issued to me back when I enlisted and it is just as good today as it was then, I just wanted to latest edition(s)
My son is first year cadet in Navy JROTC and I bought him this book before the school year started so he would learn more about the Navy. Not only built up his enthusiam, his CO was impressed that he was reading it.I have my father's Bluejacket's Manual from the early 50s and several other editions and they are great references.
