From Publishers Weekly
Brown, the author of many nature books, discusses familiar wilderness areas but pays most attention to suburban and city "wildernesses." These include abandoned lots, drainage ditches, hedgerows and, particularly, the lawn. This last, he states, actually is "a sea of life more complicated and intricate than any of our larger realms. . . . It is constantly awash in the motion of life, a grand provider of food, always a source of wonder and beauty." Interspersed with his examinations of habitats are descriptions of specific creatures to observe. He notes, for example, that the shrew has a breathing rate of 850 times a minute and eats three to four times its body weight daily, explaining its need to beand its reputation asan efficient, voracious hunter. Brown remains an enthusiastic, infectious observer of nature who will help readers notice more of the world around them. Illustrations not seen by PW. Copyright 1987 Reed Business Information, Inc.

The "forgotten wilderness" of the title can be found simply by looking with a new awareness at lawns, abandoned lots, and parks. Brown shows the reader that there is more wildlife to be found in cities than is commonly thought. Weasels, skunks, foxes, birds, and a number of other animals have all managed to adapt to life near humans. Brown does a fine job of explaining where to find these creatures, describing their habits and favorite haunts. Fans of Brown's other works will enjoy once again the engaging style and captivating tales of a man who lives his life close to nature. Readers are bound to come away with a new appreciation of nature and of the variety of wildlife to be found just outside their doors.Randy Dykhuis, Grace A. If you live in the city or suburbs and can't get away to explore nature, this is the book for you. It tells you where to look in your own backyard to find wild animals. There are good descriptions of the species that might be found in each particular environment. I found it useful in helping me identify the places in the city frequented by animals we wouldn't expect to find there. If you're an urban naturalist, I recommend this book.
Great book
Excellent book and info.
Brown makes some excellent points about areas that arte often overlooked.
Exacty as described and came fast. This is a great series of books and would recommed them to anyone that wants to help themselves.
Tom Brown has cult status with me :)
This book backs up classes at the Tracker School, and Tom says so explictly, in classes. No, it's not perfect, however no book is. You need to read other books, including Primitive Wilderness Living & Survival Skills: Naked into the Wilderness Bushcraft: Outdoor Skills and Wilderness Survival, at least. You need to spend a lot of "dirt time", practicing the skills. The most important survival tool you have is your intuition- and you develop this by asking questions, just like Tom teaches. The only really good book I've read on that is Quantum Power Questions. Asking useful questions may be the heart of survival. I have done several courses with Tom, which I have to say were far, far better than anything the military offers. I met a former Air Force survival course instructor, who told me that what Brown taught in the first course- the Standard- a week long- taught him more than he learned in his instructors course in the Air Force, which lasted 6 months. I met an instructor from the SERE course, at a Brown training, he was smart enough to be out improving himself. Tom calls himself a "coyote teacher", and is somewhat incomprehensible at times, and at other times is strikingly lucid, with a great message. Yes, he has an ego, but who doesn't. He reminds me a bit of Crocodile Dundee- some great skills, mixed with a little BS. No teacher knows everything. Journey to the Ancestral Self: The Native Lifeway Guide to Living in Harmony with the Earth Mother (Bk.1) was written by a former instructor at Brown's school, and it fleshes out some of what Brown says. Paul Rezendes' book Tracking and the Art of Seeing: How to Read Animal Tracks and Sign is one of several tracking books that are useful. Shadow Strategies of an American Ninja Master also covers information that would be useful, as you expand your skills. If you want to expand into the philosophy track courses, I would recommend reading Secrets of Shamanism: Tapping the Spirit Power Within You,Redneck Shaman,You the Healer: The World-Famous Silva Method on How to Heal Yourself and Others,The Physics of Miracles: Tapping in to the Field of Consciousness Potential, and Theta Healing: Introducing an Extraordinary Energy Healing Modality at least, before you go to even the first level, all of them deal with intuition. You'll understand what he says a lot better. Lost Secrets of Ancient Hawaiian Huna Volume I, by Tad James, would also be useful, but it is apparently no longer in print. While they are thick, the books of Neville Goddard would be useful, as well. People criticize Brown. None of the teachers out there are perfect. Charles Worsham teaches a fascinating tracking class- but that's all he does. Brown covers such a wide range of subjects, it is not so easy to be thorough on each one. I note related books because that is the most useful part of a review for me. I have found gems that way. I encourage others to do likewise.
Along with the original Field Guide to Wilderness Survival, this is my favorite in the series. After reading about the ants I spent months trying to learn to track them. Finally, I achieved success after watching an ant walk across the top of a dusty outdoor water heater.I still can't do it on concrete though. It probably sounds stupid to some people, but it made me happy.
