From the Inside Flap
Herb Brooks is best known for forging the “Miracle on Ice” team that stunned the world in 1980. He also resurrected the University of Minnesota hockey program in the 1970s, coached in the NHL, and built a reputation for unorthodox motivational and conditioning techniques. But perhaps Brooks’ greatest hockey achievements were his steadfast support of American-born hockey players and his tireless adherence to a creative, European-influenced style of play. As the hockey beat writer for the daily Minneapolis Tribune, John Gilbert was on hand to cover those Brooks-coached “U” teams and the meticulously assembled 1980 Olympic squad. In the process, Gilbert became Brooks’ confidant, close friend, and sometimes his critic. Now, for the first time, Gilbert offers recently gathered anecdotes and reflections from former players and colleagues, as well as his own first-person perspective, to illuminate the people, experiences, and even the specific game situations that shaped and propelled Brooks’ philosophies and methods. In the process, he also busts many of the myths that have grown up around the coach and his colorful career. Gilbert begins with Brooks’ childhood in blue-collar East St. Paul, his amateur playing career, and his ill-fated stint with the 1960 gold medal–winning U.S. Olympic team (from which he was famously the last player cut) before dissecting his tenure behind the Gophers bench and the entire 1980 Lake Placid story, from the selection process and barnstorming tour to a game-by-game breakdown of the Olympics themselves. Throughout, readers are also treated to impossibly colorful quotes from Brooks and a complete examination of his post-Miracle career, including his passionate battles with USA Hockey and coaching turns with Division III St. Cloud State, four NHL teams, the 1998 French Olympic team, and the 2002 U.S. Olympic squad. The result is a comprehensive, thoroughly unique, and at times rollicking portrait of the man some have called the greatest hockey coach ever. The Author: John Gilbert has been around sports his entire life. The son of the late Wally Gilbert, Duluth's greatest athlete (Brooklyn Dodgers, Duluth Eskimos, pre-NBA pro basketball, and Duluth curling), he has written about hockey at all levels. A former Minneapolis Star Tribune writer, Gilbert now reports for various magazines and radio stations. He continues to play amateur baseball in his attempt to avoid reaching retirement age.

As a hockey fan and someone who watched the 1980 Olympics as they happened, I enjoyed this book. The Olympic story has been told many times and has been captured in movies, but this book provided great insight into a lot of the details of Herb's strategies. It was also very interesting reading about Herb's coaching experiences and all the great players he had coached. The problems that I have with the book is that the author was a friend of Herb's and a big fan, so it is not an objective take on Herb's life, it is a subjective view of Herb and how everything he did was positive. The counter arguments were brought up, but it seemed that the book always took Herb's side on everything. The author also likes to point out his involvement and role in many of the decisions that Herbie made. That made it tough for me in some sections as the self-promotion seemed to get heavy in spots. The Author also painted Minnesota as the only place in the country that had skilled amateur hockey players.Saying this, I did enjoy the book and the details about Herb's life. I would have preferred a less biased view on this, but it was a good read.
I was always a big fan of Herb's accomplishments, but not of the way I observed him interact with my broadcast partner, Bob Miller, years ago. Now I understand it better as part of Herb's rivalry with Badger Bob Johnson. Bob Miller had been the voice of the Badgers, and evidently was thought to be part of that camp, even though this happened 7 years after he had departed Madison for the career he still enjoys with the Los Angeles Kings. I am aware of other confrontations as well, particularly one attack on another broadcasting colleague of mine in a post-game rant, that were particularly distasteful. However, if you have read the biographies of Steven Jobs, you probably didn't walk away liking him, either.Gilbert's friendship with Brooks is the key to his insights, which are very strong, even down the philosophy of the x's and the o's. That understanding is what makes this book worthwhile!
A wonderful story when i was growing up in the Twin Cities, memories of watching many of those players in the Minnesota State Hockey tournament and then playing for the Gophers; A great era of Minnesota hockey. It was wonderful to read about the Herb Brooks that the public wasn't able to see. It's unfortunate, that we are still stuck with the "dump and chase" version of Canadian hockey, instead of a version that emphasizes creativity, fluidity, skill and puck possession. Amazing that the US v USSR game was not televised.
I thoroughly enjoyed and was considerably enlightened about Herb Brooks and his unique style of coaching and psychology; he used new techniques and his own individual style to groom a bunch of college kids to defeat the greatest of the worlds professional hockey team at the '80 olympics. He was very good; the book reflected this.
Very good book about a great coach, man.
I grew up in Minnesota, played hockey up through high school, coached and referreed in my adult years. I have always been a huge Gopher fan, even though I no longer live in Minnesota.I was fortunate enough to meet Herb a few times, and have great memories of the kind of person he was. He was one of those rare, gifted people, who just have this "aura" about them. My conversations with him left me feeling amazing afterwards. He saw something positive in every situation, and something good in everyone.I was saddened when he died. We lost an incredible man, and a true hero.
A fantastic narrative of the mans career and accomplishments. You get a glimpse of the mans direction as well as his frustrations throughout his coaching career.
Look we all know about the Herbie Miracle on ice. Bu the author does a great job telling his background, some quiet insights before, and after the miracle game. Bought and loaded onto kindle. Great book. Her Brooks RIP American hockey misses you.
