There's a new take on just about everything now and this book is no different. Well, let me take that back- this is different. Very different and I enjoyed it! Darlene Burns, the author of Midnight Comes With the Dawn, took the vampire in a direction that reminded me of two movies, but still stood strong on its own. There was originality, as far as a vampire story can go, but there was an inner strength that made me LOVE the tale! Midnight, the name she goes by is Queen. She was purposefully created with a destiny and she's all about the biz, but there's something happening to the world, above and below. Humans are dying of a virus, that's now pandemic. Vampires, who are normally immune are now caught up in the plague, killing prey and predators alike. I loved this book. It was also nice to see a strong, feminine lead, even if she played both protagonist and antagonist. Katrine had ghosts to fight and the chapters taking us back then forward helped to clarify those issues. The action was detailed and the storyline was on point. I did find a few errors there but all in all this is an awesome story. I love the taking of something very old and snapping a new style to it and I am really looking forward to what Burns has next. Check out Midnight comes With The Dawn- available at Amazon.com!For more reviews: http://tinyurl.com/jthuqbh**eBook is from my own personal library.
This book was a blissfully pleasant break from the overused genre. Give me a lesbian paranormal book any day. I'll swallow them in minutes and grin at you afterwards. But they do get a bit repetitive. But I'm a loyal fan to a fault. After I read the first couple pages of this hidden treat, I actually texted my wife and told her 'Lesbian Vampire, Los Angeles, and The Black Death - WOW'. Put that in your coffee and stir it. What a change! It was easy to get lost in it. It's put together in two time frames making it two books in one. They didn't stray too far apart to forget where you are though. The story between the two timelines make the events meaningful and you move with it without whiplash. Its realistic approach to the effects our modern world would have with an ancient city killer was very eye opening. For being a fanciful work of art that still made you think a bit was nice! Knock the cobwebs of your brain matter a bit. How lovely! Great, fun read!
This review is directed at the author. I hope she reads it and takes it as constructive, which is how I mean it. I really don't want to discourage her, as we need more authors of lesbian fiction.First let me start by saying that I enjoyed the book, as you see by the rating I gave it. The author tells a good story, and I believe she has considerable potential. The criticisms I have are mostly grammar and usage, and one minor style problem.I took notes in preparation of writing this review, in one chapter these are the errors I found:*Incorrect words or phrases... Full proof, when the phrase is fool proof, back in forth instead of back and forth, out rank when out number was meant, he's when his was needed.*Verb and noun not agreeing in tense or in singular/plural (Singular subjects need singular verbs; plural subjects need plural verbs).*Words left out, especially prepositions (to, the).*Words used twice in the same sentence, and words that mean the same thing used in this manner... i.e. "it started to commence", this is like saying it began to begin.*Using semi colons where commas are needed (joining compound sentences).*No comma where one is needed (placing, or not placing a comma can entirely change the meaning of a sentence).*Every sentence needs subject and a verb, there were several sentence fragments*Make sure you use spell check, woamn instead of woman (typos like this are easy enough to make, but even easier to correct). This lack of editing is bad because it completely takes you out of the story. When you have to stop and think, "What is she trying to say here?" it reduces your enjoyment considerably. My final criticism is minor. It doesn't take you out of the story, but is just a style point. The author uses very few compound sentences, mostly short sentences. This makes reading feel choppy instead of fluid. It's kind of like if you want to run, but you are being forced to do the bridal march (step, pause, step, pause). Sometimes this is necessary, like going through a list, or it can be used to build tension. As I said, this is a minor point, and not a game breaker.I would like to suggest having a couple of well read people go over your manuscripts and edit them before you submit them. Extra sets of eyes will find more errors. Another thing you can do is get a Harbrace College Handbook : With 1998 MLA Style Manual Updates, 13th Revised Edition (Hodges Harbrace Handbook), which has all the rules laid out for you. This book is geared toward writing college papers, but can help a lot in other types of writing. I have one that I use in writing technical literature.I hope this helps.
Wasn't a big fan. I don't like when a book goes from past to present repeatedly throughout a whole book. Read it once and that's it won't look at it again. Disappointed
I really appreciated the overall story of this book. I felt it kept you intrigued as the reader and I kept wanting to know what was next. This is the first book I've read by Darlene Burns and I must say, that I would definitely read another by her. I hope Midnight Comes With the Dawn becomes a complete series because I can't wait for the next. Great read!!!
Great read. Love the back and forth between the present and future. Kept the suspense and my interest.
Great book, I read it each and every free moment. Can't wait to see what this author does next. Keep up the excellent work.
I enjoyed reading your book, it took me forever to finish but it was different from what I normally read so.
