About the Author
As an undergraduate, James Turrell (born 1943) studied psychology and mathematics, transitioning to art only at MFA level. A practicing Quaker, he has described one of his earliest memories: his grandmother inviting him to “go inside and greet the light†at Quaker meetings. The recipient of several prestigious awards, including Guggenheim and MacArthur fellowships, Turrell lives in Arizona.

I am a fan of James Turrell and have long admired his strangely beautiful works. Hoping to read his own descriptions of those works and do a deep dive prior to the public opening of Roden Crater, I had high hopes for this book.I'm sorry to report that it doesn't quite merit a place on my coffee table.The book contains multiple pictures of several of Mr. Turrell's works and an interesting two-page essay by Arthur Zajonc, author of the excellent Catching the Light: The Entwined History of Light and Mind, as well as three other short essays and transcripts of two Turrell interviews. Without any pun intended, it is safe to say the book is extremely light on content.Notably lacking is anything written by James Turrell. This fact, coupled with the barely average quality of the photos leads me to bestow a lowly two-star rating and withhold my recommendation to purchase this rather over-priced book.
