This book clearly illustrares the effects of war on "non combatants" such as nurses. The author details the captivity of Army & Navy nurses in the Philippines during WW II. They showed tremendous resilience, imagination and even humor as they endured years of captivity on Corregidor, Bataan, San Tomas and other locations in the islands. The mission, their patients, always came first. This book is detailed without being gruesome, it is straightforward and honest. I am glad that the history, at least some of it, has been preserved. The story of the nurses" captivity and courage didn't receive much attention.
These women, these nurses, daughters, sisters, granddaughters of ordinary hard working Americans rose to a level of bravery and dedication in ways most of us could never imagine. Under the worst conditions they never stopped caring for our injured soldiers, improvising when they had no medical supplies, working hours upon hours in deplorable conditions with no rest, giving their meager food rations to the injured and all the while standing up to the Japanese. This book tells the story that has been hidden for so many years and even though I didn't want to read it, I couldn't put it down. The Army and Navy nurses have my deepest respect and admiration. I highly recommend All This Hell.
I ordered this book for the story of the Guam nurses. I found it a very important addition to the history of military women, WWII in the Pacific and POWs. But I also found some basic factual errors in the part of the story I know something about; the invasion of Guam. Read this fascinating book for the personal stories and details of war/POW experiences, but check the military/historical details in other books. The writing is somewhat difficult to wade through and the appendices confused me. The titles of the tables imply that they cover all the women POWs written about, but (except for the listing of Guam nurses) they do not appear to include the Guam POWs. I finally decided that the one listing ages shows their age at release. (Some were surprisingly old - in their 50s, few in their 20s.) In all a very interesting topic that deserves wider recognition.

Great true story about very brave ladies.
Every student should learn about these brave and forgotten heroes.
As a nurse myself I thought this book would be interesting. Like a lot of people I never knew that we had women/nurses in POW camps in WW2. The courage these women possessed and fortitude is amazing. I really enjoyed this book and would recommend it to anyone intetested in history. These nurses should be commended and everyone should know their bravery. The narrarator just brought the whole thing together and made the women real. life was breathed into the women in the book.
