She outlines the basic diet protocol and easy ways to ramp up to a ketogenic diet, while still providing important details about using the diet with certain types of cancer or chemotherapy. You will learn how to work with your cancer team to create a personalized diet plan that fits into the overall treatment plan. There is misinformation about ketogenic plans on the internet now; why this author’s extensive clinical experience and skill is so valuable to the diet’s application with cancer. This an extremely well-informed, yet easy to understand guide to using the ketogenic diet as a complement to standard of care. Kalamian explains why the ketogenic diet can be helpful in treating cancer and perhaps help to prevent it. If you are at all interested in using food as medicine, this book is a must-have for your bookshelf. Kalamian's guide also touches upon using ketogenic therapies for epilepsy, type 2 diabetes, and potentially Alzheimer's. Grounded in biochemistry as well as her own professional and personal experience, the guide is an invaluable resource for those seeking a deeper understanding of the diet.
This book is interesting and full of helpful information, such as people following the keto diet my need more salt. The author weaves her own personal story through the book, which brought me to tears several times. She covers the science of fats and glucose metabolism, testing, some appetizing meal templates, and some good information on vitamins, minerals and other helpful supplements. Directions, warnings, and tips are included. It is clearly well researched, and will enable anyone to embark on the ketogenic diet with complete confidence.While I like the book over all, there is a proofreading error on page 210 which the author said she will be able to correct in the second printing. Under Omega-6 Fatty Acids, Gamma-Linolenic acid (GLA), "flax seed, hemp hearts and chia" are listed as sources of GLA. These are also listed as sources of Omega-3 fatty acids on page 209, where they belong. While hemp seed oil does contain 2% GLA, it is not generally listed as a good source. In Know Your Fats, Mary Enig, PhD lists borage oil (20%), black currant oil (15 to 19%) and evening primrose oil (9%) as containing the highest levels of GLA in food or supplement sources.This book is a great resource for anyone considering, or already on a ketogenic diet.
Keto for cancer is a thoroughly researched, wholistic treatment for managing cancer. It includes both the science behind the diet, and the practical use of the diet in my wellness journey. Even my husband has joined me in following this protocol and is gaining great benefits from it. This book may make your head spin as you begin to realize the lies that have been fed to the public for decades regarding diet and health. Go with it! It’s a much needed paradigm shift. I myself have adopted a keto diet mainly as a pathway to healthy aging. Miriam’s book, Keto for Cancer, is easy to read, well thought out, with highly usable information, and the right amount of precautions. It’s just the type of information we all need to help us take responsibility for our own healthcare, and to assist others if needed.
