The cover is gorgeous, like really really pretty. The book is fine; the difference with most home decor books is that this one doesn't only show pictures of nicely decorated dwellings, but it also works as a guide to choose your house and to decide which style suits you best and how to accomplish it. The pictures are nice and bright and the size is fine. It is not like those huge coffee table books but it is big enough to display it in your living room. The reason I gave it four stars is because it has a design problem that can't be overlooked in a book about design and aesthetics. Because of a poorly performed diagramming, there are incomplete sentences. Some paragraphs are just cut by the pictures and you have to guess what's written. It's hard to believe that no one noted this "detail" before sending this book to the printing. I must say it's very disappointing.

I love Apartment Therapy the website. This is my first book of Maxwell's and while I love the empire he's built I think I misunderstood the purpose of this book. I don't usually like when stylistic choices are coined a term (like "grunge" or "modern") in a book that's about finding personal style. Talk about boxing yourself in! I felt like while there are good tips the majority is profiling homes of other people. And that the pointers are specific to these people's homes. I can read the site for that. I enjoy when an image illustrates a point but I wasn't expecting a book of home tours. Maybe that's on me but either way it's just become one more book in the pile.

I was disappointed to find some graphic design errors in the layout of this book that leave a few paragraphs cut off and unreadable. I follow AT religiously and was surprised the publishing house didn't catch these. Otherwise, it's a helpful read. I would recommend Maxwell's first book even more highly. Although it's just a paperback in black and white, the advice is solid and I've gone back to it time and time again through the years.

I have been an a avid follower and fan of apartment therapy.com for a few years and couldn't wait to get my copy of this book. It did not disappoint. Not only does it feature pictures of beautiful homes it also gives great tips from how to properly hang art to how to decide on and properly install window treatments. I love interior design and have a nice collection of design books. This is a great addition. I also love that the homes featured and design ideas are within my budget. Many of my design books although lovely to look at feature high end rooms and furniture out of my price range.

I was SO disappointed with this book! I pre-ordered and got a good price (and a cute red AT tote, thanks Maxwell!) I was so looking forward to flipping thru this book...but almost all of the photos are of UGLY, cluttered, dark rooms. Most of the décor featured is very oddball- and I don't mean kitschy or playful or unique. I found literally NO new ideas that I would incorporate into my space, most of the rooms in this book need makeovers IMO.The first part of the book contains great and useful decorating info and tips but that just wasn't enough to save the truly unappealing rooms featured. Sorry, this book was a FAIL.

While there is some great inspiration in this book, in case you're not familiar, I'd like to point out that "Apartment Therapy" is the name of the company/website that put this book together. Unlike their very first book, this book is NOT specific to apartments. It talks about "Common House Styles" and remodelling kitchens, indoor/outdoor bathrooms, outdoor gardens (like having a lawn), and stencilling floors. We have a lake house, for which I've purchased books like the Remodelista book, Elements of Stule, and even The Decoration of Houses; I've referred to those over and over in my decorating pursuits. If you DO want ideas specific to a location that you might not be able renovate, please check out their first book. It's a nice enough book, beautiful, but I feel like I should have waited and just read it in the bookstore. Especially how, as previously mentioned, some text is cut off by a picture on p.14.... Probably should have waited for the second edition, at least.

imaginative spaces. good kitchens if you are not a fan of the generic kitchen seen in practically every new construction house. as someone who rescued a 60's knotty pine kitchen with a good partial paint job and some interesting furniture, i was delighted with their featured kitchens.

I've been an avid reader of the Apartment Therapy blog. This is a nice companion that compiles some of the best of home tours as well as decorating advice.
