This was an interesting idea for a story, but it needed another few rounds of story and character development as well as writing polish. I like where the author begins and the general world and hero background (trying not to give things away), but I quickly started seeing spelling and grammar issues - the kind an automatic spell-checker might not catch, but helpful proofreaders would. Then there started being confusing dialogues that could have been much smoother and better explain the story set-up. Finally, there were some glaring plot holes that just couldn't be explained away.To caveat, I only read the first book of this trilogy. At that point, I decided I'd given it a fair go, and the flaws were sufficient to make it not worth continuing. As a D&D player, I recognized the beautiful party balance put together by the individual heroes' skills, and I *suspect* the second two books would look more like a campaign ... but I wasn't able to get into the trilogy as it is now.I would love to see this kind of story go through more robust editing and proofreading, and see where the different perspectives could allow it to take more cohesive shape. I don't wish to discourage the author (quite the contrary!), but at the current state of the material, I would not recommend it for good fantasy reading.
Written as a saga, the world and people bring you and keep you there. The characters become familiar and tie the whole story together. There is enough to keep you reading until the last word on the last page. I don't understand the complaints. Yes, there are grammar problems but they are easy to skip. The pronouns cause no confusion when you get into the story. It is a great storyline even with all the slight problems.
The Rogues of Magic is my first meeting of J.T. Williams, and it won’t be my last. Within the magic of the world Williams created, we meet Sviska, a professional assassin who kills without mercy. Who accepts his assignments without thought of morals, ethics, or doubt, until he finds himself in the bedroom of an innocent and small girl. Things don’t go well for Sviska, he botches the assassination and barely escapes with his life. For his failure, his order sends him north with a new assignment, his cover a winemaker. So starts the trilogy wherein Sviska discovers magic still exists in a world he was convinced had murdered and stamped it from the face of the planet. As the story progresses and plot thickens, Sviska discovers his buried conscience and morals, developing a fondness for the citizens of the far north, where he finds friends and a loyalty he never expected. As Sviska walks the razor edge of a double life trying to be friend to the north and an assassin to his masters, he is drawn deeper and deeper into an understanding of magic that exists nowhere else in the world. Sviska is drafted as one of the Saints of Wura, chosen with what may be the last elf, Berie, a dwarf, Slats, and the last rusis, Garoa, a mage waiting to discover his powers. Together they are quested to return magic to the world and rid the land of evil. What follows are epic battles, new friends, betrayals, and personal growth as our heroes learn of each other and themselves. To survive, each must overcome self doubt and learn to depend on and trust their fellow Saints. Come follow them through their past as they walk into a future they must first make in order to survive. Seven hundred fifty one pages will hold your attention all the way through this trilogy. Some will compare this work to Tolkein, some will allow it to stand on its' own. Read and sink into the reality of heroes lives and see what you think. J.T. Williams has done a superb creation that will never let you go.
I get it. Self-published authors operate in a world of limited resources. However, if you are an inept writer, an editor is an absolute necessity.I paid 99 cents for three volumes and I want to be reimbursed 99 DOLLARS for the damage done by reading part of the way through the first volume.Plotting is muddied, character development is non-existent and the imagined world is an utter mess (the imagination, not necessarily the world).Sometimes, I think a self-published author simply rushed through writing and didn’t bother to get a friend (or a seventh-grade English teacher) to catch spelling and grammar mistakes. The first volume in this series has MANY spelling and grammar errors, but much of the brain-pain that comes from reading this mess is simply BAD WRITING.Examples:“... the brush along the road was tanned and the trees more bare.†[presumably, the brush was brown, sere, or dormant, not glowing from a beach vacation]“The stone door had a glowing seal in the shape of two stars rotating into each other, preventing it from being open.†[presumably, the seal locked the door, but perhaps the seal merely kept it from swinging open at an inopportune time]“... their white bony remains gawked outward.â€â€œDo not let your people's memory falter." [in context, this is presumably supposed to mean keep the memory of your people alive, not give your people reminders]"Thank you for caring for that of the dwarves." [presumably, “that of†is unnecessary, but perhaps the phrase is meant to reference something about the dwarves, though what is unclear]“He picked up another book that was sitting on a table on his way back to sit down.†[sentences like this indicate an author who doesn’t edit his or her own work]“... grounded-down herbs ...â€â€œ... restudying the wine-making books ...â€â€œThe images of the winemaking equipment looked similar as in traditional wine and as what was in the winery.†[another sloppy sentence, obscure in meaning, mangled grammar, and a new spelling of wine-making]“The second shipment would arrive soon, he felt.†[felt vs thought is a curse of modern usage, but has no place in an author’s description of a character's thoughts]“There was a wall of beast heads arranged in rolls going up and down the wall.†[presumably, the beast heads were in rows, but the sentence is another example of a writer who expects the reader to figure out that “A row of beast heads decorated one wall.â€]“As Sviska came to the top of the stairs, he entered the room and was flushed with warmness.†[aside from the fact that nothing prior to this sentence told the reader there was a room at the top of the stairs (much less THE room), the combination of active and passive voice, the awkward “flushed with†and the use of “warmness†instead of “warmth†makes this sentence a candidate for blather of the month]“The white door that he had already opened ahead was now shutting.†[in context, the personal pronoun seems to be one person, but the following sentence makes clear that the actor is really the other person; and “that he had already opened†could be removed to good effect]“The place they were at now was old.†[“were at now†could be replaced with “stoodâ€]“The stones here were brazen with straight lines ...†[the stones were neither unashamed nor made of bronze, so brazen is the wrong word]“... was a distinct metal smell hanging in the air.†[neither “distinct†nor “hanging†is necessary]“‘"Unfortunate as it is,’ he continued, ‘the furnace dies. For years it has long burned brightly, but I fear with all that is, it will darken and then trouble will find us. The heart of the mountain will cease its rhythmic burning.’" [this pseudo-profound paragraph embodies so much of what is jarring in Mr. Williams’ writing]Sigh ...
Unlikely allies save the realm from dark evil.Yeah if you start reading this fantastic story, beware of the hours passing you by. I nearly read outside walking my dogs!! I loved the action scenes with well written detail. Plenty of world and characters to draw in and make you stay right from the start... Read it!! 💕
