I first read this book when I was in my early twentiesand am considerably beyond that now. At first it was a little difficult to get into the book and thought maybe my memories weren't accurate. Marc Pennar, a 21 year old gentleman who will inherit a great fortune, falls in love love with a woman who has worked her way up from dire poverty became a barmaid and then married a wealthy farmer. Marc falls in love at first sight.even though she is 10 years older. After the farmer dies Marc and the widow marry. They move to Penmarric, a very neglected manor house in Cornwall that , seems more like a castle. Marc takes a mistress, has several children by here, and then his wife finds out. The main dynamics is in the children from the different mothers, the legitimate children and the bastards. All the action unfolds there is a lot of drama, that takes place in the rugged beauty of Cornwall,,among the tin mines and the ever present sea. After my first reading I had to go to Cornwall and it was as described.
This book is FANTASTIC. It changes perspectives and tells the story of the family by various important family members over the years. It's one train wreck after another and so juicy. Loved it.HOWEVER. the ebook version REALLY needs another pass from a copy editor. It was full of mistakes such as missing or extraneous punctuation, which sometimes made it confusing since it changes perspectives so much. I was able to follow along, but considering that it's not a new book, I expected that those mistakes would have been fixed by now.
A very nice story of a large family in the Cornwall area of England during the years 1890-1945. The dialogue of one individual of the family in each section of the book is very well done and made the book interesting. It is a long book but a worthwhile read. The story wraps around a woman who has a lower class beginning but without trying, attracts the eye of a much younger man of much higher class and then produces a lot of children. All of the characters have very different lives and outcomes and she lives through all of their trials and tribulations. The story is based on the high, estate owning class (inherited money) but includes the problems of the so called lower working class as well.
This is the first historical I read by Susan Howatch many years ago. She’s my favorite author and I loved rereading it on my Kindle.Penmarric tells the story of the Plantagenets, Henry II through John I, but set in the tin mining country of Cornwall. Penmarric is the manor house that represents England and the Castallack family history mirrors that of the Plantagenets.Being a history buff, I enjoy seeing how Howatch handles the various historical events in a fictional setting. It’s interesting that she implies that (using the real names) Geoffrey was not Henry II’s biological father. The only place I’ve ever read that was in The Conquering Family by Thomas B. Costain. (Just noticed Costain’s books have been kindleized but they are very, very pricey.)Even knowing the history as I do, Howatch’s writing is so powerful that the story seems fresh and new and I feel like I’m floating through the Middle Ages.If you haven’t read Howatch before, Penmarric is a good place to start.
I read this book when it first came out...it was interesting as a 12 year old. As an adult, I found the blasphemy of the Lord's name to be terrible - throughout the book I tried to ignore it. It was a violent story with no good story line. Deleted it off my Kindle.
I bought this because it received so many good reviews from readers. I was not disappointed. The unusual format of first person narratives was interesting in that it allowed for other characters' perceptions of each other to be voiced, as well as providing the personal motivations of these key narrators. It is always a question of how we perceive ourselves and our actions as opposed to how others perceive and judge them, and this book illustrates that well. It was also an interesting depiction of the morals and manners of turn of the century England's upper classes.
This historical novel is a compelling read. The family's pride and prejudices, so typical of the era, direct the life paths of the character. Lessons learned along the way can be related to modern life. Promiscuity, strict devotion to work, jealousy, disputes and great love are all part of this well-written novel.
While, I am a big fan of Susan Howatch, this novel especially grabbed me. It is a l-o-n-g novel, and I was glad it was, because I didn't want it to end. I have been to England, but never in the Cornwall region where this story is set, andit made me waht to go and see it for myself. Even the names of places sounded un-English" Penzance? Zillion? The first character introduced, Mark, isn't particularly likable--at first, but you like him better as the story goes on. I love howthe story is told in five different viewpoints, different generations, different values and ethics. Her characters arealways so complex and well-drawn. Every segment interacts with the others, and you get to know the characters notonly through their own perspectives, but through the eyes of others. Fascinating! If you love family sagas and interesting places, you will get it all here.Joan Conning Afman: author
