About the Author
Frederick J Gravetter is Professor Emeritus of Psychology at The College at Brockport, State University of New York College. While teaching at Brockport, he specialized in statistics, research design, and cognitive psychology. Dr. Gravetter received his Bachelor's degree in mathematics from M.I.T. and his Ph.D. in psychology from Duke University. My professor said the 6th edition of the textbook was an acceptable stand-in for the 7th and I found this one for a jaw-dropping five bucks. I thought it was a great introductory text. I like that they kept it direct and simple and I thought the explanations of the theory of the equations really helped understand what was happening in the equations.I could see someone with less of an aptitude for math needing more drawn out explanations but when they start stretching things out and talking like you're dim, I usually zone out and eventually lose track of what they're talking about.I thought it was funny the way most of the "In the Literature" (or something like that) sections at the end of each chapter basically said that researchers seldom actually use some of these methods because they're impractical and rely on data you'd pretty much never have. I understand that a lot of those procedures need to be understood because I'm sure they are sometimes used but even more because you need to understand them so you can understand the more complicated, more practical equations.Anyway, good times.
This text explains the concepts clearly enough that I was able to ace my distance learning class (without having taken a math class in many years). It was the second time I've taken the class, the first time with an earlier version of this same book. The sample problems with some of the answers in the back are especially helpful for knowing if you are on track or not. It also has a basic math review in the back, if you need it.
I had this book for an intro stats course for psychology but foolishly sold it back after the class was over. I'm purchasing it again through amazon marketplace because I'm taking an advanced stats class and would like to have access to the TERRIFIC tables and charts in the back of the book. The professor for the advanced stats class also likes the charts and tables in this particular book and keeps a copy of it just for that.I didn't give it five stars because the book's odd-only answers irritates me, and because there are some errors in calculations that can be tremendously confusing for beginning stats students. Otherwise it's a great book (and those issues are fairly minor ones).
This is an excellent book to read and then keep on hand. Don't sell it. You'll want to keep it and use it for referencing later on. It has lots of things that I wished I would have been able to go over when I was refreshing myself and preparing to take my state exams. I plan on buying myself another copy since it's so cheap now.
Who likes statistics to begin with. ESPECIALLY if you're a psych major, this is one of those classes you're just dreading to take.Well, most of you, at least. For such a class I dreaded, this textbook did NOT help at all. If this is a requirement, get the book. But I got by using an older version even though the professor was using a new version and only a few problems actually differed.However, if you're doing this on your own, don't get this awful book. There are plenty of newer versions out there and obviously better ones.Hope this helps,Daniel
This is a great book. Very logical and straight forward. It makes learning statistics very easy. I took a statistics course a few years ago, prior to the one I am taking now. I had a hard time learning it then, but now I am grasping all the concepts fairly well. This is a good book and it was essentially brand new even though I bought it used. Sweet!
This was suppose to be a new book but it had no plastic covering the book and the top right of the book had dog ears. Not what you expect when ordering a NEW book. Gave it a two star because it is due to the packaging and not the book.
I dreaded statistics and don't usually review required class material as it is not material I have a choice in purchasing and reading. This is an exception as it relayed statistics in a reasonable and understandable manner and I admit-I thoroughly loved this course using this text!! Taking statistics in an online forum, it is basically a self teach situation. This text allowed that forum to be possible without struggling and allowed me to thrive in the course!
