I believe at least one hundred, to one hundred fifty pages, could have been eliminated from this story. There was too much of what I call fluff (unnecessary and irrelevant prose that did very little to advance the story). I even skipped several chapters throughout the book, and was still able to keep up with the story without the feeling that I had missed anything.Also, I found the story to be very predictable. About a third of the way in, the author introduced a certain character, and I immediately suspected where the story was going. It turned out I was right.To the author’s credit, If you are into history,it appears she did research German history circa, late 1800s, and incorporated some of that into the tale.
I’m always anxious for a Durst-Benning book. I have read the previous Glassblower and Century trilogies, plus The Seed Trader. I’m fascinated with how the women of those eras lived and survived the trials and tribulations of relationships, losses and making their way through business in a restrictive man’s world. Would have given the book 5 stars however they are starting to carry much the same theme and are beginning to be predictable. Even so, I’m hoping there will be a third book in the Seed Trader series.
I love all of Petra Durst-Benning's book series. That said, I couldn't get into this book. I read the first one in the series and it was just okay. This was unreadable. I couldn't relate to the main character and found the details about the flowers and seeds boring.I highly recommend other trilogies by P. Durst-Benning, but I cannot recommend this book or this series.
Ever since the glassblower trilogy, these books just haven't been as good to me. I noticed that when the co author was Samuel Wilcocks they were better than they have been since then? This book was very boring to me for the first 3/4 all about flowers and what they mean and rhapsodizing about flowers. Flora (Hannan's daughter from book 1 in this series) is the main character and we really see just very briefly characters from book 1. The last 1/4 is so out of character from what we saw in the first 3/4 and then quickly just resolves itself. I'm not sure if there's a book 3 coming? It may seem that way from the ending?
I enjoyed this sequel to The Seed Traders. The blooming of Flora, Hannah and Helmut's daughter takes us through the joys and trials of her young life as a wife, shopkeeper and young mother. Her mistakes and joys lead us to places we too may have been. A good read.
Continuing the storyline and characters on this journey of life was compelling. Very strong characters that you weaved their attributes and thoughts of life and their changes into captivating storytelling. The emotions and strengthens of the characters were awesome. The ending was a shock, totally, but good. Hurry up with the sequel, post haste!!!!!
I have enjoyed the books by Durst-Benning but this was my least favorite. Flora (the main character) Is the daughter of the seed traders. She chooses a different interest as she wanted to design floral arrangements. I enjoyed the background information about the Baden Baden baths.
Wonderful, the first few pages, I thought , I don't know if I'm going to like this as much.I loved it.. You become invested in the characters quickly...it was a totally different story with a sprinkling of the 1st book..you realize that marriage is work and communication.. please write book 3!
