About the Author
Gwilym Davies won the World Barista Championship in 2009. In 2011 he opened Prufrock, a London café and training center which won the Best Independent Coffee Shop at the 2012 European Coffee Awards. He is currently Representative and Head Judge for the WCE (World Coffee Events) and an Authorized Trainer for SCAE (Speciality Coffee Association of Europe). Ben Townsend has been in the coffee industry for 10 years. In 2009 he opened the Espresso Room, which was awarded best coffee in London by Time Out magazine. He has worked as a trainer at London School of Coffee for eight years. In 2007 he co-developed the UK’s first accredited coffee qualification. In 2013 he was a contributor to the SCAE Barista Diploma System and he currently acts as Coordinator for the SCAE UK Education Chapter.

This is a great book with all the right amount of information on all aspects relating to coffee.

This was a gift, the print edition bought from Amazon. It was thoughtful and original, since the giftor knows of my interest in coffee. I’ve perused the book, reading only a few chapters at this point. It is well laid out and appears well written and comprehensive. Its hard cover and high quality paper for text could put it in the category of a nice coffee table book.However, whoever the editor is ought to be shot! The authors should have raised a stink! Most text is horribly difficult to read, in a relatively small font. The font chosen has no body to it. I know little of font technicals, but if you could take Ariel and make the inking super slender, and then print it to save money on ink, you have an idea. On the few green tinted pages, light green ink was used. The main text on most white pages is super light grey! Only bold and larger text is easily readable, meaning headings and some summary/intro paragraphs. Photos are beautifully rendered on very good quality paper stock. Some descriptive captions are bold and readable; others are light grey!I can only hope the Kindle version of this book is not done from photos taken of the original, as the light grey and small text of the original will bite the reader.Get yourself a different book, or get this hardcover, extract what you comfortably can from it, then return it. Save your money. For me, I actually will limit reading it for a few pages at a time, as I’ve discovered it’s readable with our kid’s 5†diameter magnifying glass, not conducive to reading an hour at a time by the fireside!
Quite an informative and interesting book, a good review of world coffee production, bean varieties, how to brew, it's all there. Unfortunately the publisher has chosen to use a faint grey ink in the main text, making the book very hard to read. The use of faint print is something that started maybe 20 years ago on kids' webpages when they didn't want adults to be able to read their stuff at a glance on their fans' monitors, but the hipsterish trick of doing that in a print book was fairly stupid; me, I like a book I can read anywhere, using my middle aged eyes and without having to be in bright sunlight or its equivalent. The very well regarded Sibley Guide to The Birds used the same font colour in one of its later editions and, thanks to user outrage, the book had to be recalled and reissued. Anyway, I'm deducting one star on account of the illegibility.
