It's a beautiful book, and well written. There are double pictures that are meant to be 3-D. There are glasses which are meant to work. There are three of us in the house, and the book did not work for any of us on the first day. It clearly is the glasses--perhaps they work for people with 20-20 vision with broad faces, but they did not work for any of us. The glasses are not adjustable, and one has to hold them to one's face continuously (there are no ear pieces). It does not adjust for Interpupillary distance (the distance between your eyes). If you are a average-size Anglo-American male (that is to say, pretty large) with 20-20 vision, perhaps this will work for you without modification. But, this was an expensive dud of a Christmas present, and the worst one I ever bought for a loved one.Edit: After doing a bit of online research, we came to the conclusion that blocking the images off from one another--via something black held vertically--might help. We placed the book on a flat surface, took the black cardboard envelope that came with our Alienware Quick Start manual, which is about 4 x 6 and quite sturdy, and placed it vertically between the two images. We then set the glasses on top of it (adjusting the card a bit so as not to hit one's nose). And this created something to lean the glasses against to keep them at a steady distance from the pictures and also to stop the left eye from seeing the right picture and the right eye from seeing the left picture.By staring at fixed spot on the upper left quadrant of the image, we each finally got the two images to resolve into one, 3-D (more or less) image. The effect is interesting--but if your eyesight needs correction so that you can read text, the image will be just as blurry as non-corrected text usually is for you (we could not figure out how to use this gadget with glasses on). I still cannot advise buying this book it unless you have some adjustable 3-D glasses that you know have already worked for you, or unless these glasses just happen to fit the distance between your eyes, and unless you have good vision without needing glasses to read text.
This book is a Godsend. I've been waiting almost 50 years for the stereoscopic images from the Apollo missions to be presented as they are in this remarkable book. The View-master reels that came out shortly after the Apollo 11 mission should have been the best format to showcase the three dimensional record of this historic event, but disappointingly, all the astronaut photos from the surface were on the reels in 2-D only! Many years later Jim Bell released his fine book "Moon 3-D"...however it came with the somewhat primitive red and blue glasses for the 3-D effect. The glasses that accompany this book are perfect, much as the clear glasses you use for 3-D movies at the cinema. The best way for them to work in this book for those who may have a problem with using them I find is to put them real close to your eyes (if you have prescription glasses, wear them), then bring your face slightly closer to the left image until they merge. My favorite images are the ones from the Apollo 11 mission because of the historic nature of the event, but the ones from above the surface can be more compelling. Take a look at the view on page 108 from the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter over the Apollo 12 landing site. You can actually see the descent stage of the Lunar module, and across the crater from it, the Surveyor 3 unmanned probe that landed there a few years earlier. It's like being in the command module looking down. A similar view on page 95 shows the Apollo 11 descent stage and Neil Armstrong's footprints from space! Worth the price of admission, folks. If I have any quibble with this book, I wish more of the images from Jim Bell's book were included in this one, especially some of the Apollo 17 surface shots. Here's hoping David Eicher and Brian May are soon to release a 3-D book of this quality on the Mars rover missions. As an aside, the images taken from orbit of the Apollo landing sites should convincingly prove that these missions did in fact take place and that they were not a hoax. Other nations such as China can now orbit the Moon and verify this. Only stupid people would doubt these facts and only liars out for profit would write books perpetuating such a false narrative.
If this book were a movie, it would be Academy Award caliber. It is a well written and easy to read history of the American and Russian Space Programs from their beginnings to the present day with the ISS. Particular focus is on the American Mercury-Gemini-Apollo Programs that culminated with Armstrong's first step on the moon. Good explanation of the purposes of each space flight was given and a knowledgeable explanation of the problems of each flight / events of the program was well delineated. The Russian program was also followed concomitantly but with less emphasis than that of the American program. Many good photos are included with the added plus of being able to see many of them in 3-D (a quality set of 3-D glasses are included with the book). This is an excellent book for anyone wanting to understand the history of the space programs without an overburdened volume of reading and detail.
Brian May always produces the highest quality books and this is a welcome addition. The details of the moon mission were all revelations to me, and I lived in Houston at the time! Of course, as a stereography expert(as well as an astronomer). the famed Queen guitarist presents amazing photographs!!!
I gave this as a present to an 11-year-old book loving boy. He and I had fun looking through the book together, and without a doubt he’ll enjoy reading and learning about the history of humankind’s quest to the moon. We briefly discussed what the book was about and he was thrilled. I was further thrilled to find out that this 11-year old was aware that Queen’s Brian May was also an astrophysicist. This is a great book. An excellent quality, too.
Great to see more people are aware Brian May is a scientist (on top of being an awesome guitar player). The pictures are beautiful and the 3-D effects make for a fab read. Strongly recommend to others as not only an educational tool, but a great way to see space.
